Frank McKinney’s Caring House Mission to aid in New York/New Jersey: Accomplished!

05 November 2012

Thank You! In 26 hours, with your help, we…

Caring House Project Foundation pulled out of our South Florida driveway at 7:00pm on Saturday, November 3 with a large box truck filled with Hurricane Sandy relief supplies headed for New York/New Jersey.

These blessings, many bought with your donations, or dropped off at Costco, included a tremendous amount of food, water, blankets, baby needs, hygiene needs, and 20 five-gallon gas containers which we filled later and transported across state lines (legal?) – like liquid gold to those who benefited!

Chris Finley and I drove non-stop through the night. 19 hours and 1,300 miles later we arrived in New Jersey at St. James Homeless Shelter and Soup Kitchen. This shelter/kitchen was the beneficiary of our earlier Survival to Thrival Tour, and was completely overwhelmed with people needing emergency assistance, so much so, that their pantry was bare when we arrived. Vesta Godwin-Clark, the Executive Director at St. James, had many volunteers there on a Sunday waiting to help unload to weighted down truck. Thank you to Karen Risch for volunteering to coordinate all logistics between CHPF and St. James.

We returned the one-way rental truck a few hours later, we’re able to get on a flight out of Newark, and were back home a little after 9:00pm yesterday (Sunday, the 4th). 26 hours later – mission accomplished.

I really don’t need to expand on how bad it is in New York and New Jersey. The media has covered it accurately. Nor do I want to bore you with the (mis)adventures of driving a large truck for 19 hours straight after working all day to collect donations to fill it. If you go to my Facebook page you can see some photos, including a heart-felt thank you video from one of the many beneficiaries.

I do want to spend a minute on our mantra that we at Caring House Project Foundation invoke in times of other’s emergency needs:

Compassion Without Action is a Waste of Emotion

Think about that statement for a moment now, and when you are next faced with the opportunity to act on it. We would not have been able to accomplish what we did with our Hurricane Sandy relief if many of you hadn’t acted on the compassion you felt. From your donations, to showing up at Costco, to your coordination efforts – thank you!

When I woke up at 7:00am that Saturday morning, after a sleepless night trying to determine what CHPF would do to help, I took action on the compassion I felt. Twelve hours later the truck was full, and we were on our way. Twenty-six hours later our impact was (or will be) felt by hundreds. Why? Read the mantra again…

It’s easy to do nothing, it’s harder to some something, no matter how small.

If you are a donor to our Caring House Project Foundation, feel good knowing that we are a small organization that makes a big impact because of this simple mantra and approach. We act when others may spend too much time talking, planning or being afraid of the red tape.

You too can take the same approach in your life.

So, what about the aftermath after the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy? What is Caring House Project Foundation going to do, as there is so much left to do?

I think we will start with the kids whose Christmas and holiday season may fall victim to Hurricane Sandy. Do you think that their parents, who were already struggling mightily, will have the resources to make it special?

Well, we will make sure they do!
